About the Artist
Born in Indulkana, a remote Aboriginal community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in South Australia, Kaylene spent her childhood steeped in 1980s pop culture. Evoking familiar gestures of the everyday, her paintings use bright colours rendering pop stars in flat pictorial space, engaging with Whiskey's own life in rural Australia. Whiskey perfectly creates comic book-like worlds on her canvases that are instantly nostalgic and captivating and is part of the talented collective Iwantja Arts, the art centre in the Indulkana Community.
Kaylene makes you want to dance inside your mind and wear a coat of many colours. She celebrates strong woman and merges fancy pop with her daily life and personal experiences. Community is a massive part of her visual language ? whimsical yet strong in message ? have a good time but look after your sisters.
