Guerrilla Girls Art

Guerrilla Girls is an anonymous group of feminist, female artist activists devoted to fighting sexism and racism within the art world. The group was formed in New York in 1985 with a twofold mission of bringing attention to women artists and artists of colour and exposing the domination of white males in the art establishment.

The members of the Guerrilla Girls art collective protect their own individual identities by wearing gorilla masks during public appearances and by adopting the names of deceased female icons such as Edmonia Lewis, Käthe Kollwitz and Frida Kahlo.

Disruptive Headlines, Outrageous Visuals and Killer Statistics

Guerrilla Girls artwork encompasses posters, billboards, books, videos and live lectures and uses facts, humour and bold visuals to expose sexism and racism in politics, the art world and popular culture all the while bringing gender and racial inequality into focus within the greater arts community.

The Guerrilla Girls undermine the idea of a mainstream narrative by revealing the understory, the subtext, the overlooked, and the downright unfair. They have done hundreds of Guerrilla Girls art projects all over the world, and they also conduct interventions and exhibitions at art museums, blasting them on their own walls for their bad behavior and discriminatory practices. The Guerrilla Girls’ motto is: Do one thing. If it works, do another. If it doesn’t, do another anyway. Keep chipping away.

The Third Drawer Down collaboration with Guerrilla Girls is inspired by their use of statistics, humour and outrageous imagery to expose discrimination and corruption in politics, pop culture, film and art. It places Guerrilla Girls artwork on everything from children’s t-shirts and mugs to tea towels and jigsaw puzzles.

The Conscience of the Art World

Over the past 30+ years, Guerrilla Girls have shared their message through hundreds of posters, street projects, actions, books, and billboards. Their retrospectives in Bilbao and Madrid, and their traveling exhibition, Not Ready To Make Nice have attracted thousands of visitors, and they continue to travel the world inspiring others to create their own effective activist campaigns. Guerrilla girls art reinvents the "F" word: Feminism!
