Susan Kare for Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

by Abi Crompton

The project
Once upon a time, in the middle of a pandemic, Third Drawer Down Studio were invited to partner with The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on a myriad of exclusive cinematic treasures. The partnership saw us designing and producing 8 collections in collaboration with Academy Members and California-based artists, designers, and creatives. Among them is our collaboration with American artist and graphic designer, Susan Kare. The pioneer of pixel art designed a series inspired by exhibitions The Wizard of Oz and The Oscars Experience, and we made their collective dreams come true by developing their concepts into Oscars memorabilia, clothing, accessories, items for the office and home, toys, games, and other movie-related collectibles. The museum officially opened in September 2021 and the products lived happily ever after. The end.

The museum
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened in September 2021 as the largest institution in the United States devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking. Global in outlook and grounded in the unparalleled collections and expertise of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Museum offers exceptional exhibitions and programs that illuminate the world of cinema, telling complete stories of moviemaking—celebratory, educational, and sometimes critical or uncomfortable.
